Hosokawa has an acute ear for timbre, and knows how to make much from little.
Kazushi Ono and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales achieved small miracles of subtlety, not only in Circulating Ocean, but, to rather different effect, in Shostakovich's Fifteenth Symphony, a work that veers unsteadily between light and dark ...
Ono and his players took everything in their stride.

Ono is an impressively attentive conductor.
As well as steering the BBCNOW expertly through the thickets of Hosokawa's score, he ensured carefully detailed support for baritone Christopher Maltman's graphically charted journey to despair in Mahler's Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen, and then gave a measured account of the most enigmatic of all 20th-century symphonies, Shostakovich's 15th, which with every performance seems to raise more questions than it will ever answer.
